Teacher Trainer Adventures – Exploring Ephesus

In the realm of teacher training, our journeys often extend beyond the confines of classrooms and workshops, leading us to unexpected places of inspiration. Recently, my own path took me to the ancient city of Ephesus, where amidst the remnants of a bygone era, I found connections between the teachings of the past and the challenges faced by educators today.

Ephesus, once a bustling hub of trade and culture in ancient Anatolia, now stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of human ingenuity. Walking through its cobbled streets, I couldn’t help but stand in awe of the architectural marvels that once adorned this city, each stone echoing tales of triumph and resilience.

It was amidst this historical backdrop that I found myself reflecting on the goddess NIKE, revered in ancient Greek mythology as the embodiment of victory, strength, and resilience. Because of my lifelong passion for Ancient History, I often draw parallels between our profession and the ideals represented by deities of old.

The goddess NIKE, with her outstretched wings symbolising triumph, resonated deeply with the theme of the recent Affiliates’ Summit organised by TESOL Türkiye in Izmir: how to support teachers and students grappling with trauma. In the face of adversity, whether it be personal or collective, educators play a pivotal role in fostering environments of healing and growth.

Just as the goddess NIKE was revered for her ability to inspire courage and resilience in times of strife, so too must we, as teacher trainers, equip ourselves with the knowledge and tools necessary to support our fellow educators in navigating the complexities of trauma in the classroom.

At the heart of our approach lies empathy, understanding, and a commitment to creating inclusive and nurturing learning environments. Just as the goddess NIKE guided warriors to victory on the battlefield, so too can we empower teachers to become agents of change in the lives of their students.

Through collaborative efforts and a steadfast dedication to our core values of honesty, credibility, and accountability, we can harness the spirit of NIKE to champion the cause of trauma-informed education. Like the ancient city of Ephesus, our journey as teachers is imbued with a sense of purpose, guiding us towards a future where every student has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of the challenges they may face.

As I bid farewell to Ephesus, I carry with me a renewed sense of purpose and determination, knowing that the lessons learned amidst its ancient ruins will continue to inspire my work in the field of teacher training. With the wings of the goddess NIKE as our guide, let us embark on this journey together, forging a path towards educational excellence and empowerment for all.
