Creating a multidisciplinary learning experience with The Little Red Hen: Tips for integrating Science, values and health lessons in your ESL/EFL curriculum
As a CLIL teacher, you may face a common challenge of keeping your students engaged and excited about learning their target language. But what if we told you that one little story could change everything? That’s right – we’re talking about The Little Red Hen!
The Little Red Hen is a popular folktale that can be used to teach a variety of subjects, including values, health education and science. The story follows a little red hen who finds a grain of wheat and decides to plant it. She then enlists the help of her friends, a duck, a cat, and a rat, to harvest the wheat and turn it into bread.
While the story is simple, it contains many important lessons about cooperation, responsibility, and hard work. These are all important values that can be integrated into an ESL/EFL curriculum. Additionally, the story provides an opportunity to introduce science concepts such as planting and harvesting wheat. And finally, the story can also be used to teach health lessons such as the importance of washing your hands.
Here are some tips for integrating The Little Red Hen into your ESL/EFL curriculum:
1) Use the story as a starting point for discussion about values such as cooperation, work ethic and responsibility. Ask your students what they think these values mean and why they are important.
2) Introduce science concepts such as planting and harvesting wheat through the story. You can discuss how wheat grows and how it is harvested. This can lead into further discussion about other crops that are grown in different parts of the world.
3) Use the story to teach health lessons such as the importance of washing your hands. You can discuss why it is important to wash your hands before you eat bread or handle food. This lesson can be extended to cover other topics such as personal hygiene and the importance of using a tissue when you sneeze.
4) Incorporate song and movement into your lesson plan. You can have your students act out different parts of the story or create a song about The Little Red Hen. This will help to make the lesson more engaging and memorable.
Integrating science, values and health lessons into your curriculum can open up a world of resources and opportunities for ESL/EFL learners. By using the example provided by The Little Red Hen story as a springboard to explore other topics, you will be able to create a multidisciplinary learning experience that emphasizes cross-cultural knowledge and understanding.
