Beyond Worksheets: Creative routines for grammar success
Ready to move past textbook exercises? Your students are! Here are hands-on classroom ideas that sneak grammar in through the back door—often disguised as play.
Sentence builder showdown
Divide kids into teams and give them cards with sentence subjects, verbs, adverbs, etc. Each team draws cards to build silly (but grammatically correct!) sentences:
“The enormous chicken thoughtfully painted a portrait.”
Switch up the decks for focus areas: modal verbs, phrasal verbs, or relative clauses.
Grammar in action: Role-play and transformation
- Animal transformation: Ask students to describe an animal, then imagine it “transforms” (into a robot, superhero, etc.), practicing tense and descriptive language.
- Pronoun parade: Each student “becomes” a pronoun and must use it correctly in a sentence about themselves or a classmate.
Editing for editors: The power of peer review
While games are great, make sure students develop a critical eye for grammar, too. Use partner-editing, highlight “Grammar Stars of the Week,” or create a collaborative “Grammar Oops!” wall where students post commonly misused sentences and suggested fixes.
Model, Model, Model!
Consistently “think aloud” as you write on the board. Articulate your grammar choices:
“Do I need a comma here? Let’s check…”
Gradually, you’ll see students internalizing these steps—writing will feel more approachable!
